WEDNESDAY JULY 16
Gold Still Glitters Miami Cigar closes a deal with the one and only Tony Borhani. July 2008As he boarded a plane for Miami, sales director Rene Castaneda had a singular goal for his company, Miami Cigar: find a new brand for his company's portfolio, pronto. Good thing he brought some reading matter along for the flight: Flipping through the Spring issue of The Cigar Report, he stumbled across our profile of Tony Borhani. "Something clicked," he says. "We wanted to expand the portfolio, but with nothing that created a conflict of interest. My first call on landing was to Aaron Sigmond, who connected us with Tony." Miami Cigar will take over distribution of the four Bahia brands (the Gold, Vintage, Icon and Trinidad) on August 1, with plans for a huge nationwide push starting this fall. It's the first time since 1997 that the company's taken on a brand outside either their own or La Aurora (rest assured, the Bahia cigars, rolled in Nicaragua, will still feature Costa Rican tobacco, just like in the old days). Which just goes to show, good things come to those who read our stuff.
