Chicago

Chicago, that city of big shoulders, is also the city of big (and small, and everything in between) cigars.

Fall 2008 , Page 25

Chicago helped make cigars an icon -- particularly that famous black-and-white photo of the city's most infamous resident, Al "Scarface" Capone, grinning with a sizable stick clenched in his teeth. The kingpin's time is long gone, but Chicago's place as a first-class financial and cultural metropolis remains. Whether you're closing the latest pork-belly futures deal, or celebrating the new exhibit at the Art Institute, there are plenty of reasons to light up -- and, despite a truly draconian smoking ban, you'll find a small but sturdy number of cigar shops at which to acquire your favorite cigars. In other words, Al probably wouldn't feel quite so welcome in his town's glittering descendent -- but he could still find a good smoke.
