This Week In Cigar History June 23 - 27
Though pressured to abdicate the throne of the British Empire for his love of a twice-divorced American, King Edward VIII was never required to give up his love of cigars. Known as His Royal Highness Duke of Windsor (courtesy of succeeding brother George VI), the ex-monarch was born this week on June 23rd 1894. Unlike his grandfather, King Edward VII who managed to eschew scandals, the Duke of Windsor -- also a devout cigar smoker, snazzy dresser, and lover of many married women -- managed to touch off a constitutional crisis in England when his last dalliance with the still married Wallis Simpson became common knowledge. The Duke's resignation (December 11, 1936) from the throne earned him the distinction of being one of the shortest reigning British monarchs. Plus, he was never crowned. The Duke of Windsor gave up ruling power but always retained his stylish blithe influence and rich cosmopolites' entourage. Well known for his obsessions with fashion and image pre-dating the modern era of public relations manipulators, the Duke of Windsor reportedly favored a mild smoke, particularly late in his life when he puffed on Dunhill Churchills.
